Have you ever wondered what happens to the body after an injury? How the body responds after a burn or trauma?
I was assigned a burn case study in my clinical rotation and it was one of the best learning experiences I ever had. To be able to take everything I learned in school and apply it to a real person - and something so challenging - was a huge opportunity for me.
I didn't realize the impact it would have on me and my career at the time. And when I saw my case study, I had no idea why the patients body responded the way it did after a serious burn injury. That is until I researched the ebb and flow phase after injury.
The case study was a great learning experience and I honestly thought that's all it would be. Something I'd learn and then forget out. When I found myself working in a Level 1 trauma unit, I saw a common metabolic response among all my patients. When the body experiences trauma, there's a physiological response which requires medical and nutritional intervention to support the individual.
In this episode of the RD Exam Made Easy Podcast, you'll learn:
1. The characteristics of the ebb and flow phase
2. The metabolic response to trauma/injury
3. The role of the dietitian when assessing a patient who's had an injury
If you want a better understanding of the metabolic response to injury, this episode is for you.
