I don't know about you but I'm a sucker for a good breastfeeding story. And I share the best story with you in this episode.
Lactation and Human Milk are not only topics that might show up on the RD Exam but having knowledge in these areas will help if you want to work with moms and pediatrics as a dietitian.
Even more than that, as dietitians, being an advocate for breastfeeding gives new moms the support they need while ensuring infants are getting the best nutrition.
Sometimes, human milk isn't available. There are many reasons for this. Sometimes a new mom doesn't want to breastfeed. Or maybe there's some other contraindications to providing breastmilk. In these situations, infant formula is the alternative.
You need to know the difference between human milk and infant formula.
In this episode of the RD Exam Made Easy Podcast, you'll learn:
1) The difference between human milk and
standard infant formula.
2) The hormones involved in lactation.
3) Some of the amazing properties in human milk - the reason why it's often called "liquid gold".
4) An amazing story and example of how breastfeeding protects the baby from disease
And because I think it's super fascinating and it's something I get asked all the time, I take the time to explain the mechanism behind milk production and how milk is moved through the milk ducts.
I've seen many women struggle with breastfeeding but fortunately, there's help available. Having support makes a huge difference in the breastfeeding experience. As dietitians, you might be the first person to identify a new mom who needs support.
If you want to learn more about lactation, the hormones involved and the big differences between infant formula and human milk, this episode is for you.
